Students start learning with easy sentences at school when they were English beginner.
One of the easiest sentences Japanese students learn is “This is a pen.”
But I’ve been wondering…
When do we use this sentence in a real situation?
We obviously know what “a pen” looks like.
There seems to be no need to explain what it is, when we show you a pen.
If there is a real situation that people should say, “This is a pen.”…
Here’s the situation.
〈Asher and his mother were at their home.〉
” I’m hungry, mom.”
Asher’s mother was busy cooking dinner. She glanced at her son and said,
” You’re eating ice cream now.”
As she said, there’s a colorful ice cream in his hand.
” No, I’m doing my homework.”
Asher turned toward his mother and said.
” What are you saying?”
His mother stopped her hand and looked at him.
Asher showed his ice cream in his hand.
” Look. This is a pen.”
Looking carefully, it was a ice cream-shaped pen.
“……right.”
